THE BOOK THIEF AND PEOPLE OF THE BOOK

(open to non-members)

Dr. Bettie Sellers

Thursday and Monday – June 19 and 23 (2 sessions)

1 - 3 pm

Goolsby 104

Cost: $11

In the first session, Bettie Sellers will review The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Narrated by a sensitive Death, this book portrays the residents of Himmel Street as they live through the fears and deprivation of WWII. Liesel, an orphan, sent to live with the Hubermans, is the character whose light illuminates the other residents of Himmel Street. In the second session, Bettie will review People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. Follow Hanna Heath, Australian expert, as she traces a rare illuminated manuscript from medieval Spain through the sacking of Sarajevo and beyond. Hear voices, see scenes from the past, but “it is Hanna's voice - edgy, contemporary - that makes the book so readable."

Dr. Bettie Sellers, retired Goolsby Professor of English at Young Harris College, has written several books of poetry. She was Poet Laureate of Georgia and has received numerous awards honoring her many contributions to Georgia and the world.
