This course will discuss intriguing personalities and key moments in French history. We will address the glorious rule of Louis XIV, the Sun King and his majestic project of the Versailles; Montesquieu, one of the greatest philosophers of the Enlightenment; Marie Antoinette, nicknamed "The Wicked Queen”; Napoleon, a rebellious boy from Corsica who built a grandiose (yet short-lived) empire; Emile Zola, a great French writer who captured the imagination of the French by his dark novels; Charles de Gaulle, Le Général;, and so on. What did it take to become a hero (or a villain) in French history? How are these characters remembered in modern France? These questions will be at the focus of our course.
