Instructor Joe DeFrank, MA

Course Fee $20

Using Ivan Strenski’s  Understanding Theories of Religion: Introduction (2nd edition) as a textbook, we will play with how different scholars define this everyday English word. This course will include classical scholars like Max Muller, Edward Tylor, James Fraser, Max Weber, Sigmund Freud, and Emile Durkheim to contemporary schools of thought.

A 2020 graduate of Young Harris college (BA History, BS Religious Studies) and a 2022 graduate of the University of Alabama (MA Religious Studies), Joe DeFrank is a RLC at Young Harris College. His academic interests revolve around identity formation, particularly with new religious movements and nationalism. He hopes to pursue a PhD in religious studies or history. His favorite activities include chess, video games, hikes, and exploring new locations.
